Finnish Stone Center

The Finnish Stone Centre introduces you to the amazing world of stone. Step inside and you’ll also find the Geo Knowledge Centre, which opens up the secrets of stone and the minerals within, giving you a wealth of information on the subject. There are spectacular mineral exhibits, including some amazingly coloured specimens from all over the planet. You can also take a closer look at how our forefathers used stone thousands of years ago and find out about today’s quarrying and stone industries. The sparkling treasure chest of jewels is guaranteed to leave you breathless! At the Geo Knowledge Centre you can look at the geology of the Earth, and there are also some short films covering subjects from volcanoes to building with stone.

The Finnish Stone Centre’s laboratory offers services to the construction industry and to scientists and researchers. The Centre also has a laboratory, which is the only specialist stone-testing laboratory in the Nordic countries.

On the Stone Centre’s upper floor you can enjoy interesting exhibitions on various themes, which change annually. Past themes have included Salvador Dali, contemporary Finnish folk art, Fabergé’s exquisite stone and enamel work, the work of Finnish designers Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva and Finnish sculptor Kain Tapper, to name but a few. The current exhibition, until the end of October 2010, features the famous duck characters of Finnish artist Kaj Stenvall. The exhibition, entitled ‘Forecast: Warmer`, invites the visitor to think about climate change.
